Big Weekend Upcoming
A somewhat slow state of games for the Grande Prairie JDA Kings the last few weeks will be forgotten in a hurry with the upcoming weekend. With just two games in the past two week the Kings will be facing one of their tougher weekends in recent memory with back to back games on Friday and Saturday.
Grande Prairie sits at 12 and 0 on the 2012 – 2013 NWJHL Regular season and that perfect mark will be tested when the Kings travel to Fort St. John Friday night and then return home the following evening to play host to the North Peace Navigators.
Just one matchup against the Huskies this season saw Grande Prairie fall behind 3 to 0 after the first period before answering with 6 straight goals to secure a 6 to 3 win and while the starts of hockey games have been a lot better for Grande Prairie in recent contests the Kings will need to be prepared to face an always stingy home ice opponent in the Huskies. Fort St John is coming off an 8 to 5 win over the Beaverlodge Blades last week and will be once again looking to play spoiler and ruining the JDA Kings perfect record thus far.
Things won’t get any easier for Grande Prairie Saturday night when the North Peace Navigators make their first visit to the Coca Cola Centre. If last season is any indication the Kings will have their work cut out for them. Peace River dominated Grande Prairie winning all three games they visited to the Coca Cola Centre with scores of 5 to 2, 6 to 4 and 3 to 0.
“It’s going to be a good hockey game” said Kings head coach Kyle Chapple.
“We’ve only seen them once so far this season and I think the score from that game is not indicative of how close our teams are.”
As mentioned Grande Prairie and Peace River have met only once thus far this season with the only meeting coming on October 6th at the Baytex Energy Centre. Grande Prairie walked away with a 6 to 2 win in that game but both teams have changed a little bit since that first contest.
“They’ve added a few guys to their roster and should have a few key pieces that weren’t in the lineup when we met them the first time, but we’ve also added a few bodies as well. We fully expect this to be a tough test for our hockey team”
Gametime Saturday night is set for 8:30pm and is being dubbed “Pink The Rink”. Like last year the JDA Kings will be helping support the fight against cancer with proceeds from the evening game going to the Canadian Cancer Society. The Canadian Cancer Society is putting on its annual Cancer tournament this weekend with features hockey teams raising money to support this great cause to finding a cure.
Be sure to join us Saturday night at the Coca Cola Centre to help cheer on your JDA Kings and support a great cause as they will play host to the second place North Peace Navigators.
