Christmas Coming For JDA Kings
The annual NWJHL Christmas break is fast approaching, while some teams are already on an extended holiday the Grande Prairie JDA Kings will have one more game Thursday night leading up a two week holiday. To top it off the Kings will have a chance to start the break where they had envisioned, in first place. In there way is the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks.
With first place Peace River idle until after the Christmas break the Kings will have an opportunity to pull one point ahead in the NWJHL standings if they can pull of a win against a struggling Dawson Creek team.
For much of the season the Jr. Canucks have sat in fourth place behind the Kings, Navs and Slave Lake Wolves but have struggled this month of December and are now losers of four straight. Still sitting in fourth place Dawson is only two points up of a couple of teams who have turned the corner and continue to climb the NWJHL standings. With a win Thursday night the Jr. Canucks would not only head into the break on a high defeating one of the NWJHL’s stronger teams but it would secure fourth place heading into the new year…a huge turn around from the previous season.
Behind the Canucks sits the Fairview Flyers. Combined with a Canucks loss the Flyers will have a chance to move into a two way tie for fourth with a win over the Sexsmith Vipers on Friday night.
Just two other teams are in action heading into the Christmas break and both are playing each other tonight in Beaverlodge. While the Sexsmith Vipers have tailspun towards the the NWJHL basement with six straight losses the Beaverlodge have become one of the hotter teams heading into the Christmas break having won four straight, with one of those wins coming against the JDA Kings.
For Grande Prairie a win Thursday night will be a nice end to a fairly strong first half of the season. The Kings stormed out of the gate winners of 14 straight to start the season. Unable to reach a team record of 18 straight wins the Kings would stumble a little following their first loss to the North Peace Navigators on November 17th. While the team managed to pull together a few wins after that 9 to 4 drubbing in Grande Prairie it was clear the team wasn’t playing it’s best hockey. That became apparent when the team suffered it’s first back to back regular season losses in well over a year on December 7th and 8th when they would once again lose to Peace River 5 to 3 and follow it up with another loss the next evening in Beaverlodge to the Blades 4 to 2.
Still despite the sudden lull the team managed to get it together this past weekend finally beating Peace River in Grande Prairie 8 to 7 in a shootout. The next afternoon they would move to within one point of first place with a 7 to 5 win over Fairview.
The month of December has been a bumpy one but the Kings will have a chance to make things right with a win over the Jr. Canucks and move one point up on the Navs for first place. Join us Thursday night at the Coca Cola Centre for an 8:30 pm game versus the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks.
