JDA Kings Visit Fairview
Coming off their first loss of the season the Grande Prairie JDA Kings are looking to get back on the winning track heading into their only game of the weekend against the Fairview Flyers. After opening up with a win in Fort St. John last weekend Grande Prairie fell victim to a hungrier North Peace Navigators and like last year dropped another home game to their Northern rival.
With last weekends loss it was apparent this week at practice that the JDA Kings are refocused.
“We had a couple good skates this week and despite being down following the loss last weekend the team looks confident and more committed going forward” said Kings Head Coach Kyle Chapple.
Grande Prairie plays only one game this weekend but it’s shaping up to be an important one. For the first time in the teams existence they will play a junior hockey game in the town of Fairview and from all accounts of the atmosphere within the Flyers home arena the players are excited for the opportunity to play in front of a rowdy crowd.
Long overdue the Flyers entered the NWJHL this season when it became apparent another team was needed when the Whitecourt Wolverines graduated to the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Having high expectations the Flyers got off to a slow start. Since the end of October though Fairview has been playing much better hockey and managed to pull themselves out of the NWJHL basement and into sixth place, just one point back of the Sexsmith Vipers with one game in hand.
The month of November has been a good one for them as well having won 4 of 6 and at one point rattling off three straight wins. They just about made it four falling this past weekend to the Slave Lake Wolves 5 to 4.
“When it comes to being a new team with 25 new players it might take a little while for the club to gel, they seem to be playing well as of late” mentioned Chapple.
“It’s going to be our first taste of action in Fairview and if it’s anything like what we’ve heard it should be a fun atmosphere to be a part of.”
Game time goes Saturday night at 8:30 pm at the Fairview Arena.
The only game on Friday night in the NWJHL will see the surging North Peace Navigators host the Sexsmith Vipers.
News and Notes: With the December Roster deadline approaching teams will be making preparations on adding and removing players from their rosters. Kings Head Coach Kyle Chapple fully expects a few new fresh faces to be on the roster come the deadline.
“We’re fortunate to only be sitting at 23 players when we can carry 25 so we expect to add a couple bodies to help fill out our roster before the December deadline”.
One would think at 13 and 1 the Kings wouldn’t need to add much but Chapple insists his club will have to get better.
“We’re always wanting to get better, we don’t want to sacrifice the team chemistry we’ve developed but if you can add some high calibre players you have to. Other teams will be getting better come deadline day so we have to as well.”
The December 1st requires all Junior teams to reduce their roster size to 25. Come January 10th that roster will have to be reduced to 23 with the second cut down.
