JDA Kings down FSJ Huskies – DHT
It wasn’t pretty, but the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings will take the two points.
Saturday, the Kings watched their 4-0 lead slowly vanish at the Crosslink County Sportsplex.
After Koltin Caron, Zach Bennett, Joel Wamsteeker and Kelsey Bauman scored for the Kings, the Fort St. John Huskies tried to claw their way back into the game with two even-strength and two powerplay goals in the second and third period.
Bennett’s second goal in the second period stood as the game winner as the Kings edged the Huskies 5-4.
The Huskies doubled the Kings, 14-7, in shots in the third period in search of the equalizer, but couldn’t solve Quebec native Jeremi Blais, who earned his first win in net for the Kings with a 30-save performance.
“Physically, Fort St. John likes to throw their body around and being a short bench and taking quite a few hits, I think ultimately, we started to wear down a bit and we gave up a couple powerplay goals,” said Kings head coach Kyle Chapple, of the game’s second-half.
“To ultimately get the win, I think we held on and did enough to get the two points.”
Saturday’s game marked the end of a five-game homestand for the Kings, who won three of the five games.
The Kings (6-4) play their next four games on the road, beginning with the North Peace Navigators and Huskies on Nov. 13-14, followed by the Sexsmith Vipers and Navigators on Nov. 18 and 21.
Vipers raise money for Moberly family
The Sexsmith Vipers raised money for the Moberly family on Saturday during their game against the Beaverlodge Blades.
Donald Moberly, 18, died in hospital from injuries he sustained after being stabbed at the Alamo bar in Sexmith on Oct. 20. Brother Jeremy Moberly, 20, and Trenton Dougall, 19, who both play for the Vipers, were also hospitalized with injuries, but later released.
Saturday, without Jeremy and Trenton in the line-up, the Vipers defeated the Blades 7-1.
The Vipers, according to a Facebook post, donated $10,288 to the Moberly family via in-kind donations, 50/50, admission and concession.
