JDA Kings Host Huskies
With just one point separating them from their first ever regular season crown the Grande Prairie JDA Kings are hoping Tuesday night will be a historic one when they host the Fort St. John Huskies for the fifth and final time in the 2012 – 2013 regular season.
A lot of talk has been made about the Kings this season and the aspirations they have to win their first league championship but as surprising as it is to hear they’re one of two teams having never won a championship (Beaverlodge the other) it’s almost equally as surprising to hear they have never finished first at the conclusion of a regular season.
Hopefully Tuesday night will rewrite the history books so to speak.
Without a doubt the JDA Kings enter tonights contest the hottest club in the NWJHL. Since their last loss and surprising upset in Beaverlodge the Kings have rallied off thirteen straight wins, ten of those coming in the month of January.
With a win Grande Prairie would clinch first place and end the month with a perfect record which doesn’t sound like a bad conclusion to their 2012 – 2013 regular season home schedule.
As has been the case with a lot of teams the Kings have played lately Fort St. John enters tonights game on a current four game winning streak which started with an impressive win over the North Peace Navigators back on January 13th. The Huskies have jumped up the standings and currently sit in sixth place, two back of their Alaska Highway rival the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks.
Grande Prairie holds the season series 4 to 0 but throughout have had close games with the Huskies. Their first meeting back in October seen Fort St. John hold a 3 to 0 lead after twenty minutes before Grande Prairie scored six straight. Earlier this month the Kings squeezed out a 2 to 1 win on home ice before surviving another 8 to 5 frenzy in Fort St. John just three days later. The lone blow out came back in November when the Kings won 9 to 2 in Fort St. John.
A perfect recipe for what should be an entertaining final regular season home game for the Grande Prairie JDA Kings.
Notes: The Kings magic number is one, any scenario of a Kings win, overtime/shootout loss or Peace River loss will clinch first overall and home ice throughout the playoffs. We tried to check league history and from all accounts we’ve found a Grande Prairie Junior B team has never finished first overall in the NWJHL standings at the conclusion of the regular season.
Not to be forgotten it appears to be a one/two race between two Kings players for the leagues scoring title. Forward Lyndin Lewis (30GP – 41 Goals – 39 Assists – 80 points) has a slim lead on his teammate Nolan Trudeau (32GP – 34 Goals – 43 Assists – 77 Points) heading into the final three regular season games.
In net Sky Buller has top honours in both goals against average (2.37) and save percentage (0.925) although has played significantly less games then second place Patrick Earle.
Game time takes place at 8:30 pm at the Coca Cola Centre. Join us for our final regular season home game and come support your Grande Prairie JDA Kings.
