JDA Kings Win in Peace
It’s Eleven straight wins for the Grande Prairie JDA Kings and an undefeated January thus far after defeating second place Peace River Friday night by a score of 5 to 4. While nothing is official as of yet the win should all but secure first place for Grande Prairie heading into the NWJHL playoffs in February.
The win puts Grande Prairie (29-3) at 58 points and will require just one more point in there remaining three games to clinch top spot and home ice advantage throughout.
“Another gutsy effort tonight in Peace River, guys have really been playing well this month” said Kings Head Coach Kyle Chapple.
An up and down game in Peace River which saw numerous lead changes throughout the night had Grande Prairie trailing 4 to 3 with 9 minutes to go…but something thats been different in this team from last years has been it’s resiliency to not panic. Once again that showed Friday night at the Baytex Arena.
Just a minute after Ethan Kalugin put the Navigators ahead in the third Kings forward Daniel Bishop knotted the affair at four. Two minutes later red hot Nolan Trudeau secured the game winner.
“I think facing some adversity this season has really helped our game. We’ve trailed in a handful of games and the guys haven’t panicked, it showed again tonight and it’s a good sign heading into playoffs” said Chapple.
The Kings win combined with the Peace River loss makes the magic number one meaning any scenario of a Grande Prairie win or Peace River loss will clinch first overall.
Still Chapple wants to head into playoffs on a high and ending the month of January undefeated would be a big lift.
“We’ve had some ups and downs like most clubs do throughout the hockey season but we seem to be peaking at the right time. We certainly want to keep this streak going right into playoffs”.
Grande Prairie will have a chance to remain undefeated in January when they play their final regular season home game at the Coca Cola Centre Tuesday night against the Fort St. John Huskies.
While a win Tuesday will secure first there will be some scoreboard watching tonight as the streaking Fairview Flyers are in Peace River to play the Navigators.
