Jr. B team retires Trudeau and Wamsteeker’s Jerseys – Logan Clow DHT
Kings Win Third Straight
Message received and lesson learned.
After losing 7-4 against the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks on Dec. 4, the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings have responded with three straight wins.
“We’re a young team and sometimes you need things like that to learn from,” said Kyle Chapple, head coach of the Kings.
“I think that’s one thing we’ve learned this season… it doesn’t matter if you play Peace River, or Fairview, or play Dawson Creek or Beaverlodge, you have to come to the rink with energy and ready to play because on any given night, any team could beat you.”
Saturday, after a special pre-game ceremony retiring Nolan Trudeau and Corey Wamsteeker’s jersey to the Crosslink County Sportsplex rafters, the Kings defeated the Sexsmith Vipers 7-2 at the Crosslink County Sportsplex for their third straight win.
Kevin Henley led the way with a pair of goals and forward Kelsey Bauman had three assists. Kyle Smeding, Donald Gaudreault, Joel Wamsteeker, Tyrone Kipling and Koltin Caron also scored.
Goaltender Andy Gilker improved to 3-0 with 28 saves.
“It was a complete team effort. We had contributions from every line; everybody was helping in some matter and it was nice to see some guys who had been struggling a bit to have a real good game for us,” said Chapple, noting it was “pretty close to a full 60-minute effort.”
“Overall, as a whole, I thought it was one of our most complete games of the season. I think once we got rolling, we got momentum, especially in the third period, and we started scoring a few and getting the game out of reach.”
Chapple said the young team is “getting better every day”. He said he is starting to see a improvement within the team’s play and notes it starting to show in their recent wins.
The Kings close out the remainder of their 2015 schedule at home on Dec. 17 against the Beaverlodge Blades (8:30 p.m.) and Canucks on Dec. 19 (8 p.m.).
