Kings building on winning streak – DHT – Logan Clow
In the midst of a four-game win streak and five-game home-stand, the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings return to action Friday and Saturday against the North Peace Navigators and Dawson Creek Junior Canucks.
The Navigators (2-3) have lost their last two consecutive games.
The Jr. Canucks are in search of their first win of the season having lost their first six games.
“It’s just putting together a full 60-minute effort and coming in and putting our best effort forward,” said Kyle Chapple, head coach of the Kings, of their weekend games.
“I think we’ve been (working hard). I think guys have been hungry (to win). I think our defensive play has improved and we’re given up less shots. And, obviously, our special teams have been good, as well. Early in the season we lost a couple games because we were struggling giving up powerplay goals and not scoring any when (we had powerplays). It’s turned around where our powerplay has been really good lately and we’re doing a better job shorthanded.”
In their last four games, the Kings have gone 17-30 on the powerplay, while killing off 17 of their last 20 penalties.
Kevin Henley leads the Kings with six powerplay goals, followed by Darrel Hewko with four.
“It’s one of those things where when it’s hot, it’s hot and when it’s not, it’s not,” said Chapple, of the team’s powerplay.
“It’s clicking right now and guys are making good decisions with the puck and when we do get a good opportunity to score, they’re burying it.”
Kings add Bennett to line-up
Forward Zach Bennett has returned to the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings.
Bennett registered one goal in five games with the Fort Francis Lakers this season in the Superior International Junior Hockey League.
Last season with the Kings, Bennett tallied 16 goals and added 23 assists as a rookie.
“It’s going to be a good addition,” said Chapple.
“I think he’s a guy who is a year older; he’s a big forward; he’s a guy that can put the puck in the net and he’s only going to help our team this weekend and throughout the rest of the year.”
Bennett is expected to be in the team’s line-up this weekend.
Both games at the Crosslink County Sportsplex are at 8 p.m.
