Kings Close Out With Win
Well folks, thats a wrap.
As the buzzer rang on a 7 to 1 win at the Coca Cola Centre Thursday night it officially marked the end of the 2012 – 2013 Grande Prairie Kings exhibition season. A little longer then in years past this edition featured more dryland training, a few more weeks worth of practices and two games in Fort Saskatchewan.
While most other NWJHL teams will kick off their preseason schedule this weekend the Kings are getting set to open up their second season in the NWJHL one week from today when they host the same team they beat up on Thursday night.
After having two dreadful starts in Fort Sask the past weekend the Kings got off on the right track torching the Vipers for 5 first period goals and outshooting them 17 to 10. Once again it was special teams that got the team headed off on the right track when forward Devin Bell would score the first of two shorthanded 6 minutes into the game.
From that point on it would be all Kings in the opening frame. Forward Sheldon McArthur continued to impress early on this preseason as he added another goal 3 minutes after Bell opened the scoring. Unsung defensemen Nic Yee and forward Ryan Trudeau would add singles before sophomore forward Corey Wamsteeker would round out the first period with a beautiful Pavel Datsyuk like breakaway goal.
After that either the Kings slowed down or the Vipers caught up. Both teams traded goals in the second period. The Vipers Lucas Gow scored on the powerplay before Bell would get his second of the contest poking home a rebound.
The third seen much of the same play with the only goal coming from Kings forward Kevin Garner at 5:16.
A Lot of Work Left To Do
With the conclusion of the exhibition season the Kings coaching staff have begun work to make roster cuts and moves prior to the home opener September 21st.
With a handful of veterans out of the lineup for Thursday nights game the Kings gave some rookies and returning players one last shot at impressing the coaching staff in hopes of securing a spot on the roster. The hockey club is set to practice Sunday, Tuesday, and again on Thursday and its expected the finalized roster will be posted sometime mid week prior to their final practice.
