Kings home for playoffs – Clow DHT
It could potentially be a very quick first-round post-season series for the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings.
After earning a 5-3 win on Tuesday at the County Sportsplex, Taylor Lileikis, Donald Gaudreault, Joel Wamsteeker and Tyrone Kipling propelled the Kings to a 4-3 win on Wednesday night in Dawson Creek. Goaltender Andy Gilker earned the win with 33 saves.
“In the first couple of games, we could off to a good start. In the first period, we found our legs and got engaged really in those games and got out to a lead and it created some momentum for us and got us some powerplays early in the game,” said Kyle Chapple, head coach of the Kings, assessing the series thus far.
The Kings, up 2-0 in the best-of-five-series, can close out the series on Saturday back at the Sportsplex at 8 p.m.
Should the Canucks win on Saturday, game four would be back in Dawson Creek on Feb. 21. And, if necessary, a decisive game five would be back at the Sportsplex on Feb. 25 at 8:30 p.m.
A quick conclusion to the series would give the Kings a few days to rest.
“We wanted to feed off the first two games (on Saturday). I definitely think we can still play better than how we’ve played in the first couple, but obviously a good start is going to mean everything,” said Chapple, of trying to close out the series on Saturday.
“We expect Dawson to come out with a hard game. They know their season is on the line and I don’t expect them to hand us anything. I think that they’re going to be pushing real hard to push things back to game four in Dawson Creek on Sunday. We’re going to have to match their intensity.”
The Kings would face the winner of the Beaverlodge Blades and North Peace Navigators series who play their first three games on Feb. 20-22.
The winner of the Sexsmith Vipers and Fort St. John Huskies series, which kicked off Thursday night in FSJ, will play the Fairview Flyers, who earned a first-round berth after finishing No. 1, in the second round.
