Kings Look to get Back on Track – DHT
The County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings are challenging the team’s veterans to step up their play.
In the midst of a two-game skid, the Kings host the Fort St. John Huskies on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Crosslink County Sportsplex and then travel to play the Beaverlodge Blades on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
“Our approach this weekend is to not worry about anyone else but ourselves. That’s got to be our main focus right now. We haven’t seen either team yet (this season),” said Kyle Chapple, head coach of the Kings.
“I want to see us be hungry. I want to see them come out and not be OK with the way things have gone. It’s a tough way to start the year, but it’s very early and we can turn this around…
“I want them to come out and be confident; work hard; and, do the things that we’ve been working on. And, if we do that, I think we’re going to have success.”
The Kings, who haven’t had trouble scoring goals in past, have struggled on offence to start the season. The team has been outscored 17-4 through their two games.
“It’s a big weekend (for our veterans). I think, ultimately, we haven’t played well and we’ve been giving up too many goals, but we also have to put a few more in the (opposing) net. A thing we have worked on this week (in practice) is our defensive play. When you’re better defensively, you’re going to get more offensive chances,” said Chapple.
“We have to get some of our guys playing in the offensive zone a little bit more and getting those quality chances and burying them when we do. That’s an area where some of our veteran guys can step up…”
The Kings have made an addition to their roster this week.
Chapple announced the team has added 20-year-old forward Jorden Reid-Whyte, from the Golden Rockets, of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.
“We know that he has some experience and he’s a guy that can help in the (locker) room and we know is going to be a good player for us. When he became available we jumped on it right away and we’re extremely happy to have him here.”
