Kings Route Vipers in Opener
The Grande Prairie JDA Kings got the season rolling in a big way Friday night when they handed the Vipers a 12 to 0 drubbing in the opening game of the 2012 – 2013 NWJHL regular season. The Kings once again continued their dominance of the Vipers spanning over this year and last as the club has managed to beat Sexsmith seven straight games.
The 12 to 0 score seemed to be a polar opposite of the first 25 minutes or so of the hockey game. The first period saw a steady onslaught of Kings shots, 21 to be exact, but Sexsmith goaltender Nigel Heath stood tall in the opening frame stopping 20. Both teams looked set to end the frame locked at zero but waiting in an opportune position was reigning MVP Nolan Trudeau who snuck a shot in far side with just under a minute remaining to give the Kings a lead at the end of the first. Despite only recording three shots in the opening twenty minutes the Vipers did have a couple of great chances but were pushed away by starting goalie Nolan Bowker.
Both teams traded a few chances in the early moments of the second before the Kings offense came to life. Sophomore forward Corey Wamsteeker would spark the Kings with two goals coming at 7:09 and then again at 13:34 to push the Kings to a two goal lead. Shortly after Wamsteekers second goal however the wheels fell of for the Vipers. The Kings woulds stretch their lead to five adding two more goals, one coming from forward Sheldon McArthur and the other on the Power Play from Kevin Garner.
The third appeared to be a different game entirely with the Kings scoring more in the final frame then in the previous two. Seven goals in the final frame and twenty two more shots directed at the Viper net. Wamsteeker would record his first hat trick of the season to get things started. Nolan Trudeau, Ryan Trudeau, Garret Schacher, Devin Bell and rookie forward Spencer Bowers with two would round out the scoring for the Kings who start the season 1 and 0.
