Kings split weekend games – DHT
There’s something about playing the North Peace Navigators that the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings seem to struggle with.
Friday, the Kings lost 7-2 to the Navs at the Crosslink County Sportsplex. Though the Kings had a goal from Darrel Hewko and Joel Wamsteeker, the Navs capitalized on their powerplay chances, scoring four times with the man advantage.
The Kings also lost 7-3 to the Navs in their season opener on Sept. 26.
“I didn’t like our game on Friday at all against Peace River. I don’t know if it’s a mental thing when we play them, or what it is, but we were just flat. We just didn’t really come to play,” said Kyle Chapple, head coach of the Kings.
“…Our turnovers were just terrible. We turned the puck over in a lot of bad areas of the ice – neutral zone turnovers and defensive zone turnovers, which Peace River capitalized on.”
The Navs and Kings next meet on Nov. 13 in Peace River.
Saturday, the Kings responded with a 4-2 victory over the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks.
Chapple said he was pleased with the team’s puck managaement, as well as the play of forward Zach Bennett.
Bennett, who re-joined the team after starting the season with the Fort Francis Lakers, led the team with two goals. Joel Wamsteeker and Chase Allam also added a goal.
“I like Zach’s game in both games this weekend. I thought he played well. He was buzzing all night against Peace River and had a couple Grade A scoring chances that he got robbed on,” said Chapple.
“He’s going to be a great addition coming back on our team and obviously he’s a guy who can put the puck in the net.”
The Kings (5-3) host the Fairview Flyers (9-0) – the only undefeated NWJHL team – on Oct. 31 at the Crosslink County Sportsplex.
The Flyers defeated the Kings 10-1 earlier this month.
“If you have a bunch of turnovers against a team like Fairview with all their scoring power, they’re going to capitalize. We have to have good puck management,” noted Chapple.
