Kings Sweep Opening Weekend

Your JDA Kings swept there opening two games this past weekend with a 4-2 victory on Friday night in Peace River and a 6-2 win in their home opener on Saturday night versus the Sexsmith Vipers at the friendly confines of the Crosslink County Sportsplex.

On Friday night Austin Hrehoruk opened the scoring on an unassisted tally in the first period but the Navigators would come back with two goals from Theo Cunningham before the end of the frame to take a 2-1 lead to the dressing room. Zach Bennett tied it up early in the second period. The score remained tied until rookie Ty Lawrence popped one home on the power play to give the county Kings the lead. the game remained a one goal affair until 18:57 of the third period when Darrel Hewko scored the insurance marker. Will McCreight was solid in net for the Kings picking up his first win in the NWJHL stopping 34 of 36 shots.

On Saturday in the teams home opener the boys came out flying in front of their home crowd  three times in the first six minutes and twice on the powerplay.. Zach Bennett sniped his second in as many games with Ty Lawremce once again scoring on the PP like he did in Peace River the night before and captain Donny Gaudreault also scoring on the power play to stake the Kings out to a quick 3-0 lead. The Vipers got one back on a powerplay of their own early in the second period however Zach Bennett notched his third of the season shorthanded in the final minute of the second period to give the home side a 4-1 lead. Sexsmith was able to get one back on the same powerplay just before the end of the second period closing within two goals heading into the break. Hewko then took away any doubt in the games outcome potting his third of the season in two games 1:24 into the final frame. Newcomer Achiel Schlepp drove the final nail in the coffin with :59 seconds remaining on the clock and the Kings skated away with a decisive 6-2 win to start the season 2 and 0. Will McCreight once again was sharp picking up his second win.  Also of note Dawson Paul [icked up three assists in the victory.


The Kings host the new look Beaverlodge Blades on Friday night at 8pm at the Crosslink County Sportsplex and travel to Dawson Creek on Saturday night to tangle with the Jr. Canucks.
