Kings sweep weekend – Logan Clow – DHT
The County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings extended their North West Junior Hockey League win streak to six games over the weekend.
Friday, forward Ryan Trudeau was the overtime hero as the JDA Kings defeated the North Peace Navigators 3-2 in Peace River.
The game was highlighted by the JDA Kings killing off a nine-minute penalty in the second period after JDA Kings rookie forward Kyle Smeding was accessed a game misconduct, five-minute fighting penalty, a two-minute instigator and two-minute roughing penalty after getting tangled with an opponent.
“That’s a big win for us. We had already lost a game up there this year and we came back and the boys went to work. (The guys) played well,” said Kyle Chapple, head coach and general manager of the JDA Kings.
“It seemed like after we killed that nine-minute penalty, we got momentum off it and our goaltender Andy (Gilker) made some big saves for us at key times. When we got a chance to score in overtime, we buried it.”
It was a high-scoring affair for the JDA Kings on Saturday in a 12-3 win over the Beaverlodge Blades at the Crosslink County Sportsplex. The JDA Kings outshot the Blades 72-25.
The Blades are 0-11 this season.
“When we play five-on-five, we know what the outcome can be if we play the right way and putting 72 shots on the board and 12 goals is what we know we’re capable of if we go out and play the right way,” said Chapple, after the victory, adding he was also pleased with the team’s composure.
The JDA Kings are 8-1 this season.
Chapple said he was pleased with the team’s work ethic over the weekend, but noted there are areas of his team’s game that need to be adjusted.
“It’s always that full 60-minute effort. We’re getting real close…” said Chapple.
“It’s just touching up little areas of the game that mean so much – being a little tougher to play against, stronger in your own zone and hard on the forecheck.”
The Kings are off until Nov. 21, when they travel to face the Fairview Flyers.
On Nov. 22, the JDA Kings are back at the County Sportsplex to host the Dawson Creek Junior Canucks.
