Kings Take Game 1 – Game 2 Wednesday in PR
Just when Joseph Sylvain was posed to take first star honors something happened.
Peace River North Peace Navigator Sylvain had scored twice Saturday night in the third period to tie the game at 5-5 with less than eight minutes to go after watching his club fall behind 4-0 early in the first game of a best-of-seven North West Junior Hockey League semi-final against the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings.
What happened was Wyatt Lawrence!
Lawrence grabbed first star honors away from Sylvain, and helped the Kings to a 1-0 lead in the series with the 6-5 win, with a hat trick including the game winner just 2:25 after Sylvain had tied the game.
The Kings had shaken the Navs with the early 4-0 lead including three in the first period.
Lawrence, an 18-year-old from Sexsmith, opened the scoring on the powerplay and then two quick ones – on by Lawrence at 10:03 and then another off the stick of Zach Bennett just 10 seconds later – gave the visitors a 3-0 margin after one.
Kelsey Bauman made it 4-0 at 6:14 of the second and it appeared the Navs were going to breeze to the opener win.
But then the comeback started.
Kyle Craddock, on the PP, made it 4-1 at 8:02 and Parker Sharp narrowed it to 4-2 at 15:08.
The Kings pushed back when Bauman scored at 15:41 to create a three-goal spread again, but Craddock’s second of the period at 19:30 set up the Sylvain-Lawrence showdown in the third.
The Kings were better on the PP scoring three goals on eight chances while the Navs managed one on seven tries.
County of GP goaltender Andy Gilker earned himself third star honors by stopping 37 of 42 shots. Riley Medves in the Peace River net was good on 28 of 34.
The series continues in Peace River at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
