Kings Take Game 1
Your JDA Kings jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and held on for a 5-3 victory in Game one of their best of five quarterfinal series against the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks at the Crosslink County Sportsplex.
Jackson Rinne got the Kings on the board 3:35 into the first period beating DC goaltender Josh Round to give JDA a 1-0 lead. Just under three minutes later Brock Clements capitalized on the powerplay to put the home team up by two. Dawson Creek had three power play chances including a lengthy five on three later in the period but were unable to get on the board.
The Kings were once again able to capitalize on a powerplay at 12:54 of the second period after some beautiful puck movement got it back to Joel Wamsteeker at the point and he ripped a clapper in the top corner past a screened DC goaltender to give the hosts a three goal advantage. The teams continued to exchange powerplays without any further scoring in the period along with a penalty shot awarded to DC which was stopped by Kings goalie Andy Gilker who made it look easy.
In the third period the Canucks came out with a little more fire and were able to capitalize on an early man advantage when captain Collin Mathieson scored on a low shot from the point that eluded the glove of goaltender Andy Gilker cutting the Kings lead to two. Mark Readman made it interesting at the 10:38 mark putting home a shorthanded marker to make it a 3-2 score in favor of JDA. Just 47 second later Donald Gaudreault would pick up a rebound in front of a yawning cage and deposited the puck into it to help the Kings regain their two goal cushion. However on the next shift Wyatt Warnes directed a puck towards the front of the next that went of the stick of goaltender Gilker and flipped over his catcher to keep DC close. However it would be for not as Kevin Henley won a draw in the Kings zone late in the period with the extra attacher on for the Canucks and Jackson Rinne deposited a 180 footer into the empty net to seal the win and send the Kings to the BC city Wednesday night with a 1 game to nothing lead in the series. Shots in the game were 37-35 in favor of the Kings. Kevin Henley lead the Kings with three assists in the contest.
Wednesdays game in Dawson Creek is set for 8pm. We hope to see a ton of GP fans their with noisemakers to cheer on their hometown boys!
