NWJHL in High Gear
The 2012 – 2013 edition of the Northwest Junior Hockey League officially kicks into high gear as all but one team are slated for action on the weekend.
Last weekend the JDA Kings and Sexsmith Vipers kicked off the regular season at the Coca Cola Centre in Grande Prairie with the Kings walking away with a 12 to 0 win. Both teams will be in action again this weekend as a total of 6 games are slated to be on tap, three taking place Friday night and another three Saturday night. The only team not to see game action this weekend will be the Fort St. John Huskies who will kick off their 2012 – 2013 campaign Thursday, October 4th.
Your Grande Prairie JDA Kings will host back to back home games this weekend.
While the club is coming off a big victory over the Vipers they know full well they can’t let off the gas on either club this weekend. Friday night the Kings host the Beaverlodge Blades and the following night the Slave Lake Wolves. The Wolves will be returning to the league after taking a one years leave of absence and signs look positive for the team to be competitive coming into this season. Kings coaching staff is well aware of what their up against and know they have to be ready facing two teams opening their seasons this weekend. Both games are scheduled to start at 8:30 pm.
Elsewhere around the league the expansion Fairview Flyers will play their first ever regular season game and it won’t be an easy task as they square off with the North Peace Navigators Friday night in Peace River. Both teams have already faced off in exhibition with Peace River walking away with a 6 to 4 win in what proved to be a entertaining hockey game. With both clubs having a few regulars out of that game its expected that it will be another close contest with each teams full lineup. Game time in Peace River is 8:00 pm.
The remaining game from Friday night will see the Sexsmith Vipers host the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks. After a disappointing open to the season the Vipers will get a boost being on home ice. The Jr. Canucks finished last season on a low but look to rebound with a win in Sexsmith. The Vipers won’t have much rest win or lose Friday night as they will host the North Peace Navigators in Sexsmith. Despite the contrast in 2011 – 2012 records the Vipers played the Navs tough last year and will look to do the same. Both games in Sexsmith are an 8:00 pm start.
After battling much throughout the pre-season the Beaverlodge Blades will once again face off against the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks in the remaining Saturday night game. Whether or not a late return home effects the Canucks will be left to be seen but as most other teams this weekend they should get a much needed lift from a home town crowd in their home opener. Game time in Dawson is scheduled for 8:30 pm.
A bevy of NWJHL action on tap on a handful of communities. If you’re in the Grande Prairie area be sure to stop the Coca Cola Centre for this weekends games and come out and support your JDA Kings.
