Rinne to the Rescue in OT

October 13, 2014

Jackson Rinne picked a pretty good time to score his first Junior B goal.

It came in overtime Saturday night and gave the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings a 3-2 win over the Dawson Creek Junior Canuck at the Crosslink County Sportsplex in Clairmont.

Rinne’s goal, his second point in two games of Jr. B hockey, allows the Kings to remain the only undefeated team in the North West Junior Hockey League with a 2-0 record.

In Saturday’s other game the Peace River North Peace Navigators blanked the Sexsmith Vipers 11-0.

Rinne’s heroics spoiled a comeback effort by the Junior Canucks.

After falling behind 1-0 when Kelsey Bauman scored at 5:22 of the first period, the B.C. team tied it at 1-1 just 1:36 later on a goal by Connor Rose.

The Kings netted the only goal of the second period when Corey Wamsteeker found the twine at 11:51 to make it 2-1 going into the third.

Dawson Creek, once again, fought back to tie it when Scott Reczka scored at 12:20 to tie it at 2-2 setting the stage for rookie Rinne’s game-winner at 3:57 of the extra frame.

Rinne was named the game’s third star while first star honors went to County goaltender Andy Gilker, who made 31 saves on 22 shots. Josh Round in the DC net made 31 saves on 34 shots.
