Wamsteeker NWJHL Player of the Month
In the first of its kind Grande Prairie JDA Kings forward Corey Wamsteeker has won the Kal Tire NWJHL player of the month. This past season the Northwest Junior Hockey League decided on awarding and recognizing it’s players accomplishments by offering up a monthly award voted on amongst the NWJHL brain trust.
Much to little surprise Kings forward Corey Wamsteeker was a hands down choice as the first every recipient.
Starting early and starting quickly Wamsteeker has been a thorn in opposing teams goaltenders since entering the league last season but is well on pace to surpass his totals from the previous year. Just ten games into the NWJHL regular season Wamsteeker currently leads the league in goals (17), assists (19) and points (36) averaging a whooping 3.6 points per game. The only player to be better in the point per game bracket is teammate and linemate Lyndin Lewis who is averaging 3.7, having played one less game. In fact as of this writing the JDA Kings own the top six spots for league leaders, they are respectively Wamsteeker (36 pts), Lewis (33 pts), Nolan Trudeau (26 pts), Ryan Trudeau (21 pts), Sheldon McArthur (19 pts), and Devin Bell with (18 pts).
Capturing the NWJHL Rookie of the Year Award last season Corey put up 66 points in 29 games played to finish third in league scoring. An incredible first year to say the least but “Wammer” if he stays healthy and keeps up this early season torrid pace could be in line to shatter his last seasons totals. If he happens to play in all 35 regular season games at a current pace of 3.5 per game he would be looking at a total well above the 100 point plateau, 122 to be exact. Being so early in the NWJHL season one will have to wait and see if he can keep pace with his current numbers or if any teammates can surpass him.
By winning the award Wamsteeker will receive a gift package courtesy of Kal-Tire.
Other nominees included Fort St. John Huskies #12 Cayle Bell who registered 2 goals and 7 assists in 8 games played. Fairview Flyers Khalin Marsolais had 4 goals and 7 assists in 8 games played for the expansion team.
There were two goalies nominated and both had strong starts. North Peace Navigators Patrick Earle went 5 (wins) and 0 to start the year with a sparkling 1.47 Goals Against Average and a stingy .947 save percentage. Not to be outdone rookie goaltender David Readman was stronge in net for the Jr. Canucks posting 4 wins and 1 loss, one of these wins included a 30 plus save shutout in Beaverlodge which helped the Canucks to a 1 to 0 victory.
Other nominees included Vipers Colby Klassen who in ten games posted 4 goals and 7 assists. The Slave Lake Wolves have had a resurgence since re-entering the NWJHL thanks in large part to Gordy Laderoute who is average above a goal a game, scoring 10 goals with 3 assists in nine games played. Rounding out the nominations was Beaverlodge Blades Kirk Sang who in eight games played has registered 8 goals and 4 assists, good enough for 12 points.
Special congratulations to Corey Wamsteeker for winning and all the other nominees for being apart of the first ever Kal-Tire NWJHL Player of the Month Award.
